Workforce Bridge: CA Oil & Gas Transition Tool

Step-by-step guide

This walkthrough shows how to move from your current or former oil and gas job to a list of in-demand California careers your skills already fit. Nothing you enter leaves your device unless you print or share it.

Choose your view

Worker

  1. 1

Pick your view on the home page

Choose Worker. You can switch views any time from the button in the header, and Start over clears every selection if you want a clean slate.

  2. 2

    Choose your county

Select where you are looking for work. The ten priority counties for oil and gas displacement are highlighted, or you can look statewide.

    Tips

    • Pick the county you can realistically commute to; wages and demand vary by region.
  3. 3

Select the job you are leaving

Choose your displaced oil and gas occupation. If you held more than one relevant job, add the others in the additional occupations search so their skills count too.

    Tips

    • Not listed? Type the title and pick the suggested standard occupation.
    • Add trades, service, or military roles as well. They widen your matches.
  4. 4

Review the skills you already have

Your past role expands into broad competency areas. Click any area to read the specific competency statements behind it, and follow the O*NET link for the national job description.

  5. 5

    Read your career matches

Careers that match you are ranked by how much of your experience transfers. Each card shows the match strength, typical California wage range, demand, and whether prior experience boosted it.

    Tips

    • Use the Field area filter to focus on a sector such as Construction and Trades.
    • Open a card to see the full competency profile for that career.
  6. 6

    Check the path to qualify

Every career card lists the steps to become eligible: certificates, on-the-job hours, estimated time, estimated cost, and possible funding sources.

  7. 7

    Explore careers outside your matches

Interested in a field you have no background in? Add it under exploring other careers and the tool builds the same profile and qualification path for it.

  8. 8

    Save the careers you like

Click save on any card. Saved careers collect into your shortlist so you can compare them and print them later.

  9. 9

    Print your two reports

Report 1 is your current skills and competency list. Report 2 is your saved careers with matching competencies and training details. Both open a print dialog with a Save as PDF option.

    Tips

    • Bring the printouts to your local America's Job Center of California appointment.
  10. 10

    Look for openings

Use the Hiring now links on each card to open live California job searches on LinkedIn, Google Jobs, and Indeed for that occupation.

Common questions

Do I need an account?
No. Your selections are saved in this browser on this device. Use the Start over button on the home page to clear everything.
My job title is not in the list. What do I do?
Type it into the additional occupations search. The tool suggests the closest standard occupation title and folds its skills into your matches.
Why do several careers show the same match score?
Scores are banded. When scores tie, careers are ordered from most similar field to least similar, so the closest fits appear first.
Are the wages and openings live numbers?
Wage and demand ranges are planning estimates from public labor sources. The Hiring now links open live searches on LinkedIn, Google Jobs, and Indeed filtered to California.
Can I keep a copy?
Yes. Both print reports open a print dialog where you can choose Save as PDF.
